Vacations in Manali – The Valley of the Gods

Manali is one of the most beautiful cities in the Himalayas, which are almost untouched
and unspoiled. One of the former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has
given a very nice description of Manali, one of his poems called "Tumhe Bulati Manali,
Manali literally means praise you. Has compared this place into a fairyland forever
charming with its snowy mountains, rivers, streams and forests. Also called "a land of
celestial beings, where even the gods have fun and play" and where the almonds and hot
sulfur springs abound. According to him, "Manali is both a friend and comforter as a
gentle breeze fragrance in the infernal heat."

All this and more comprises the magic of this small, quiet village in the Himalayas,
which until a few decades ago was almost invisible on the tourist map of India. But with
the growing insurgency in Kashmir, people started to turn its attention to this place.

Manali is situated at an altitude of 1,950 meters at the Beas River Valley and is located at
the northern end of Kullu valley. It is the administrative part of the Kullu district. It was a
trade route since ancient times and leads to Ladakh towards the Karakoram Pass to
Yarkand and Khotan in the Tarim Basin.

The city is named after the ancient and venerable legislator Manu Brahmins. The word
Manali literally means the "Abode of Manu." There is also an ancient temple in this city
that has been in this wise. The city and its surroundings is of great importance to
indigenous culture and heritage, as it is described as the "House of Saptarshi" or the
Seven Sages.

The climate in Manali is freezing in the winter and is moderately cool in summer. It
becomes a nice contrast to the summers of the plains of northern India. It is a popular
Himalayan tourist destination and accounts for nearly a quarter of all tourist arrivals in
Himachal Pradesh.

Winter Sports in Manali: Over the years, Manali has gained recognition for adventure
sports like skiing, hiking, climbing, mountain biking etc. One of the only sports in the
Yak skiing is also presented by Times magazine as the "Best of Asia" to "Sports Extreme
Yak."

Golf: The area of ?Manali is the most suitable for winter and summer skiing. The best
months for skiing in Manali is from December to February. The site has natural slopes
and in the summer months you can ski in some localities in Narkanda.

Heliskiing: One of the most sporting, literally hair-raising! The helicopter dropped the
skier on top of a snow capped peak and then the person must come down from the
mountains make their way through songs and unknown routes. It is a test of risk-taking
ability of the athlete. The best places to explore this sport are Hanuman Tibb, Tibb Deo,
Rohtang pass and pass Chandrakhani in Manali region.

Carnival: This is one of two winter fairs organized in the state, with the other in the state
capital, Shimla. This carnival is organized in February, when there is plenty of snow and
tourists can participate in organized winter sports in the snow at its summit Rohtang Pass
and the ski slopes of Solang Valley.

As anyone who can dare to face the harsh cold winter months in the Himalayas should
certainly visit the Valley of the Gods and the experience of the sport in all its glory.
Manali welcomes you!
