Tips on Buying Used Engines

Should you or shouldn't you buy a used engine? It is quite often that even in today's tough economic times, there are people who still think or are lead to believe that they must buy a new/used vehicle when their vehicle has serious engine problems. When an engine blows or seizes the first reaction is of shock and the anxiety. The feeling of…"what am I going to do now?" This is when cooler heads will prevail and thinking through your options becomes your best bet. There are many things for you to think through like…

What is the value of the car or truck without an engine?
How much do you still owe on the vehicle?
Should I replace the engine?
Should I replace it with a brand new engine or a used engine?
How would I know if it is a good engine and worth the money?
How would I know if the engine would even run after I put it in?

All of these questions and more are good things to think about. Buying a brand new engine may be too expensive for what you need for this particular vehicle. The used engine may feel risky if you don't know more about it. The choice is always up to the consumer to make. Usually, buying a used engine is the more reasonable path to consider before you replace your vehicle. The only time it does not make a lot of sense is when the engine has more value than the value of the car if you were to sell it without an engine. If that is the case you are better off buying something else altogether and seeing what you can get for your vehicle on trade in or by selling yourself. Unless the cost of the engine is more than the value of the car is sold. That is when I suggest that you purchase something new.

If you do determine that going with the used engine is the path for you then it is good to know as much as you can about the engine before you buy. One of the first things to look for is if there are service records available on the engine. If so read through them carefully and ask questions if unsure about something. If there is a Car-Fax that is another great opportunity to see the overall record for the vehicle to help determine if there could be some potential problems you might be buying. The car could have been in a flood or something that would stop you from making a mistake when buying. Another way to know more and to help you feel more comfortable about purchasing a used engine would be to be able to see and hear it run.

Some of the best places to check out used engines are reputable salvage yards in your area. A great thing when going to a salvage yard that has a great reputation is that you will feel more confident about the purchase and you will be able to ask questions from an expert. Another way to feel confident about buying a used engine is if you can hear it and see it run before you make your purchase. Since the internet allows instant communication often times you can check out the used engines you are thinking about for your vehicle from the comfort of your home PC or even your phone if the salvage yard has apps and is mobile ready.
